Updating sprite from other script in edit mode

Hi, I have two following classes:

 public class ItemType : ScriptableObject
 {
     public Sprite sprite;
 }
 
 public class Item : MonoBehaviour
 {
     private SpriteRenderer spriteRenderer;
 
     [SerializeField]
     private ItemType m_Type;
     public ItemType type
     {
         get => m_Type;
         set
         {
             m_Type = value;
             spriteRenderer.sprite = m_Type.sprite;
         }
     }
     
     private void Awake()
     {
         spriteRenderer = GetComponent<SpriteRenderer>();
     }
 }

What I would like to do is to create a custom editor for the Item that automatically changes the sprite when ItemType I assign an ItemType. I tried to do it using the property setter, but in edit mode spriteRenderer is null because Awake has not been called yet.

I thought of using the ExecuteInEditMode attribute, but that would run Update as well, which is not very desirable.

Is there some way to implement this type of behaviour?
