How to notify user if an update is available at Playstore?

I want show my game users a notification if an update is available at play-store. Here it says we can achieve it by hosting a text file(containing version code) on server and then compare it with current version, but I don't want to use it as it will create instability when a large number of users hit the server.

Is there any other way to achieve this functionality?
