What is the most efficient way to import 2D sprite animations

Hello, I am currently researching for the most space efficient way to import 2D sprite animations and unfortunately I haven't been able to find a conclusive answer.


We plan to have lots of Full HD PNG image sequences that will serve as sprite animations. Is the best method to do this just importing these png images directly and creating the animation clips inside of Unity? I imagine that Unity does a fair amount of compression after building the project, however during development those images are saved inside the Assets folder in their raw form and can get quite large quite fast. Is there some method that can be used to compress the images even before importing them into Unity? I have experimented with tinypng and the results are great, but I am wondering whether even more space can be saved. One of my ideas is to convert the image sequence into a video clip, however only a few formats support transparency and are usually uncompressed.


The final question I have: Is it an overkill to have the sprites in Full HD? We want the game to "be in full HD", but of course most of the sprites will only cover up a small part of the screen. How should we decide what is the most appropriate sprite size?
