Question by Silverlode · Nov 27, 2019 at 08:03 AM · editor2d spritesfreezingsprite editor

Can anyone manage to slice at 8192x4096 texture into 64x64 sprites

Whenever I try slicing a 8192x4096 sprite in the Sprite Editor, the editor freezes and doesn't recover.

I am on Windows 7, Unity 2019.2.13f1.

I have tried a multiple of sprite settings in the inspector prior to opening the sprite in the Sprite editor. I've tried:

  • set sprite mode to multiple

  • ignored alpha

  • changed the max size to 8192, and lower settings also.

  • set Wrap mode to Clamp

  • set Filter Mode to Point.

I've tried a plain, freshly made texture in Photoshop in case anything was amiss with the original texture I tried.

I've filed a bug report, but if anyone can confirm it they can or can't achieve the same, that would be useful.

How long did you wait for Unity to complete the slicing? That resolution and 64x64 sprites comes to 8192 sprites. At best, this is going to take several minutes to complete, I would think, and probably longer. Are you actually planning on using over 8000 individual sprites? If not, I would consider extracting the sprites you are going to use and put them on a much smaller sheet.

25 minutes later still frozen.

Unfortunately I don’t control the source graphics, although over half the 8000 slices are in use.

@Silverlode I can suggest scaling the original image size down in Photoshop by 1/4. The file might be to large for it to open.

Also, is your sprites individual pieces or in tiles? If they're in tiles, you can line them up on a 64 x 64 grid in Photoshop.
