how do i change player sprite and then maintain that sprite when loading a new scene?

ok so im making kind of a block dodge 2D game where obstacles come from the sky and you have to survive for as long as possible, and i wanna make it so after a certain amount of time my sprite changes and i keep that sprite when i restart the scene. i managed to make the timer and the player changing sprites but when i "lose" the game i change back to the original sprite and not the sprite i changed to. what do i do?

You could make a static field that contains the current sprite object, as static fields won't get overwritten when you restart a scene.

 public static Sprite savedSprite = null;
 
 private SpriteRenderer renderer;
 
 void Start(){
     renderer = GetComponent<SpriteRenderer>();
     if(savedSprite != null){
         renderer.sprite = savedSprite; 
     }
 }
 
 public void SetSprite(Sprite newSprite){
     savedSprite = newSprite;
     renderer.sprite = savedSprite; 
 }
