Character Moves Without stopping

Hi guys,

Please, could somebody tell me what I'm doing wrong here?

I want the character to move towards just in his Z coordinate. So, I want to take his actual Z value and -1.5f to determine the range that he can move each time. However, he moves towards indefinitely.

Here's how I'm doing it:

  public void Move()
 
 {
 
 Vector3 targetPosition;
 
 targetPosition.y = 1.4f;
 
 targetPosition.z = this.transform.position.z - 1.5f;
 
 targetPosition.x = this.transform.position.x;
 
 transform.position = Vector3.MoveTowards(transform.position, targetPosition, velocity);
 
 }

How could I solve it?

Set the z-position for your object outside the update function so that it doesnt get updated in every frame. Currently, the z-position of your transform is becoming z-1.5f in every frame.

I've tried this, but it doesn't work, it still keeps moving:

         CheckIfCan$$anonymous$$ove();
         
     }
 
     public void CheckIfCan$$anonymous$$ove()
     {
 
         if (mov.game$$anonymous$$anager.NPCTurn && this.transform.position != targetPosition && Cant$$anonymous$$oveNpc == false)

             {
                  Cant$$anonymous$$oveNpc = true;
             }
         }
 
     }
 
     public void $$anonymous$$ove()
     {
         
         targetPosition.y = 1.4f;
         targetPosition.z = this.transform.position.z - 1.5f;
         targetPosition.x = this.transform.position.x;
         this.transform.position = Vector3.$$anonymous$$oveTowards(transform.position, targetPosition, velocity);

     }

How could I set the Z position outside the update function?

In the above code snippet, although you have called $$anonymous$$ove() function inside CheckIfCan$$anonymous$$ove(), but ultimately, $$anonymous$$ove() is being called under Update only. When do you want to update targetPosition? Is it at a specific event? Or it just have to move to z-1.5f? If latter, set targetPosition in start. If former, edit targetPosition at that specific event.

I want to update the variable when the NPC has already achieved the target position or when its raycast doesn't detect the player

May be you are calling your move function in update()? It gets recall every time and updates your current z position - 1.5f. Thats causing it to move infinite.

Yes, it's being called inside Udpate. It's a NPC which needs to move in a grid. It's a tactical RPG. The NPC needs to see if the player is reached by his raycast. If he detects the player he shoots, otherwise he moves foward.

Basically, that's what I want to do.

move the "move forward" commands out of update, into a new method something like: "checkIfIcan$$anonymous$$oveAgain" - set a moveRate, and next$$anonymous$$oveTime float variables. then do logic "if/then" check...

 float moveRate;
 float next$$anonymous$$oveTime;
     void checkIfICan$$anonymous$$ove(){
         if(Time.time > next$$anonymous$$oveTime)
     ``{
           next$$anonymous$$oveTime = Time.time + moveRate;
           //do move stuff here
     ``}
     }

something like that.
