Question by gavindw6 · Jun 04, 2020 at 07:52 AM · transform.position

Why can't I reset 3d player position?

The script is attached to the player object, and pressing escape opens up a menu which has a button which references the player object and calls Reset.ResetPlayer()

There are no errors, and the console says that the player's position was updated, but the player doesn't move. If you track the player's position in the console it says that the button reset it, but if you check in the Inspector it stays the same. And moving after pressing the button shows the same position as in the console, as if it never was actually reset.

This is my code:

 using System.Collections;
 using System.Collections.Generic;
 using System.Diagnostics;
 using System.Security.Cryptography;
 using UnityEngine;

 public class Reset : MonoBehaviour
 {
     Vector3 originalPosition;

     // Start is called before the first frame update
     void Start()
     {
         originalPosition = gameObject.transform.position;
     }

     // Update is called once per frame
     void Update()
     {
         UnityEngine.Debug.Log(gameObject.transform.position);
     }

     public void ResetPlayer()
     {
         gameObject.transform.position = originalPosition ;
         UnityEngine.Debug.Log(gameObject.transform.position);
         UnityEngine.Debug.Log(originalPosition);
     }
 }

This is console output:

 (11.8, 4.3, 5.4)
 UnityEngine.Debug:Log(Object)
 Reset:Update() (at Assets/Reset.cs:20)

 (17.0, 4.3, 19.5)

 (17.0, 4.3, 19.5)

First off let me apologize for the long wait on moderation, there is a large number of posts waiting and I don't like rushing answers because most of you are newcomers =) welcome to the forums!

There could be many reasons for this, the code you posted is working fine and should definitely reset the player. However, there must be something that is instantly setting the player back to the position he was in. Likely your animator (root motion?), or some other script that also follows the character.
