Make player walk over a bridge over the level? (Topdown 2D game)

Hi, right now I'm making a game that is top down and 2D. I was wondering is there a way to make the player walk over a bridge that is over the level? For example, if the player walked up some stairs to reach a bridge, and the bridge is over parts of the level, how can I make them be able to cross that bridge? Likewise, how do I let the player pass under the bridge when below it? I want to create multidimensional levels instead of completely flat 2D levels, what should I do? Do I absolutely need to switch over to 3D in unity? Thanks!

You will need to create colliders on the bridge steps. Make it so once the player has touched the bridge step colliders, the player will "increase a level" this can be done in a variable. IF it does, then make the bridge cross able. If the player is not in this level he will go under the bridge. Simulate this by removing some of the alpha of the material used on the bridge.

As long as the player has increased the level he can access whatever there is to access on this other lever.

Another way to do this is to make a loading screen. IF the player goes to the bridge then make the player go to another scene.

I would also suggest adding colliders on the side of the bridge to prevent the player from walking off the bridge (unless you want them to be able to walk off). Toggle these colliders on/off.
