Reset function for AI car?

Hey everyone Currently I am making a basic racing and driving game in Unity. I have an AI car which follows a marker in a series of checkpoints across the track. Basically, the car hits the marker which then transforms its position to the coordinates of the next checkpoint, making the car go to that point. However, what I have noticed is that in some instances the AI car "misses" the marker and then proceeds to travel in circles around the checkpoint containing the marker. As a result, i wanted to make a reset function which, after a certain amount of time, would reset the car to the nearest checkpoint containing the marker. Is such a function possible? If yes then ow can i work towards making one?
