Question by misternobody · Oct 11, 2011 at 01:34 AM · ioslicensepluginsnative

Is Pro really required for plugins on iOS?

I'm developing a game which may utilize native code on mobile platforms. I've read the following page:

http://unity3d.com/support/documentation/Manual/Plugins.html

This page seems to imply that i MUST purchase Unity Pro in order to use native code when building iOS and Android apps -- "Plugins are a Pro-only feature."

But then there's this page:

http://unity3d.com/unity/licenses

This page seems to indicate that I can write/call native plugins if I use Unity Basic + iOS Basic -- for Plugins, there's a checkmark next to iOS Basic.

Which is correct? I've also read on prime31.com that their native Plugins work entirely with Unity Basic + iOS Basic, so I'm hopeful that's a supported scenario.

I may be a bit late but I currently use a ton of plugins and I have never paid anything yet to Unity Tech or anyone else for that matter regarding anything regarding Unity.

It's a Pro + Mobile feature so you can use it on iOS Basic without any problems.

Sorry, that's not entirely clear to me. When you say "It's a Pro + Mobile feature" -- are you saying that I would need to purchase both Unity Pro AND iOS Basic in order to use native plugins -- such as those provided by prime31.com?

If so -- someone might want to:

  1. Tell Unity that their licensing information is confusing! And here's other people interpreting it various ways:

Here's one saying that Unity Pro is required: http://answers.unity3d.com/questions/146331/plugins-like-perlin-noise-in-the-unity-indie.html

Here's one saying the Unity Pro IS NOT required: http://answers.unity3d.com/questions/167900/plugins-promobile-only-feature.html

  1. Tell 3rd party Plugin providers (e.g. prime31.com) that their products are indeed NOT meant to be used with Unity Basic. While it might work, it's not a legally valid choice.

Can anyone from Unity clarify this?

I think Peter wants to say that you need to have either the Unity Pro version or Mobile Basic to use plugin. So if you've purchased iOS basic with unity basic, you can use the plugin feature, but only on iOS platform.
