Importing 2D Transparent sprites not working

When downloading png images of sprites with transparent backgrounds and importing them into my project, the image is never imported without the background. Its just a white square with the sprite inside. Can someone please walk me through the entire process of importing png images and removing the background just to leave the sprite in Unity? Not one tutorial I have seen has ever showed me how to do this. They always start off by saying "so I just imported this sprite..." but I want to know how did you remove the unnecessary white background. The image is a 2D sprite and I turned on alpha clipping but the white background is still there! Thanks for reading.

Also when you are making the material using the sprite texture, if your sprite has a hard edge, set the alpha clip threshold to something like 0.5. It's usually better to use transparency instead of alpha clip though because alpha clip will 'eat into' your sprite at low values, and will show a border at the edges of the sprite at higher values.

Very simple. Select the PNG file and in the inspector set the Texture Type to Sprite (2D and UI) and that should be all. alt text If not, make sure to select the Alpha Source. alt text And check Alpha is Transparency.

If this doesn't work make sure that the PNG file is truly transparent by viewing it in any editor, (windows' paint 3D is convenient)

Well I guess I'll try. Thanks though.

Me neither... Even Paint is able to show transparency. Why is it such an ordeal in Unity?
