How to attach clothing (with extra bones) to a character?

I want to create a character customization system, where the player can change into different kinds of clothing. Since the clothing items need to be animated with physics, their rigs may more bones than the base body rig.

I've been looking for a solution, and found several forum threads like these:

https://forum.unity.com/threads/stitch-multiple-body-parts-into-one-character.16485/page-3#post-6316347

https://forum.unity.com/threads/tutorial-how-to-make-clothes-animate-along-with-character.475253/

The code in these posts basically searches for the bones which are used by the base body, and uses them to replace the ones used by the clothing. However, this method only works if the clothing models have the exact same (or fewer) bones with the base rig.

Suppose I have 3 objects:

  • a nude body with base rig

  • a dress, whose rig contains the base bones, plus some extra bones for the skirt part

  • a hakama, whose rig contains the base bones, plus extra bones for the big sleeves

The extra bones are configured with Magica Cloth or Dynamic Bone to give them physical animations.

How can I attach those clothing items to the character's body at runtime, let them follow the body's motion, while maintaining their own cloth sim animations?
