Question by carlessegura · Jun 16, 2021 at 06:45 AM · audioinspectorcompressioncompressed

Why does Unity compress PCMs?

Hello,

We are creating video animations with Unity, and we want to include the audio in Unity. But this videos aren't going to an app, so the total audio size of the project, doesn't matter. Instead, I need my audios at the highest quality possible, without any compression.

My question is: Why is Unity still compressing my WAVs, when I change the "Compression Format" (in the inspector) to PCM? Is there a way to not compress audios at all in Unity?

I will attach an example image.

Has anyone asked the same question?

Thank you in advance.

If you click decompress on load you should get some options... anyway audio tracks are very heavy to load not compressed on mobile even more so if you are not gonna compress them you will get crashes or worse... You won't notice the difference from uncompressed to compressed audios...

First of all, I think you didn't read my question at all... This is for video animation purposes, my audios are not going to a mobile game/app... That's why we don't care about audio compression, we are just going to export the video from Unity...

Second, if you change the Compression Format of an Audio to Vorbis, and then start compressing an audio with the Compression Slider that Unity provides, you can notice the difference between compressed and uncompressed audios....

And finally, I just want to know what is Unity doing to my audio that the Original Size and the Imported Size are not the same. Supposedly, an audio in WAV format and PCM shouldn't have any kind of compression, but something is being applied and I don't want it.

Thank you for your answer, though :)
