Question by ChrisDaDestroyer · Aug 08, 2021 at 07:24 PM · installation

Having trouble installing unity

I am installing unity (not unity hub), but whenever I install it it goes halfway through the installation, says it is executing UnitySetup64.exe, verifies the installer, and then asks me for admin password. According to other questions I've seen, it is supposed to ask for admin rights before it starts (i am not admin and the admin account is locked and nobody can enter it, not even my dad who is the admin) but it doesn't ask for admin rights until it trys to setup unity and then i get stuck.

Just a long shot, maybe if you can get your dad to switch off user access control (assuming windows) and try the installation again.

Control panel > user accounts > change user account settings (reduce bar down to none), may require reboot.

Not based on any specific Unity knowledge by the way, just general issues installing stuff into windows. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable can chime in, but the other thing is that I think that you have to be an administrator to carry out the installation and use Unity going forward (as the application needs access to parts of the file system restricted to admins). If you have the time and patience to test, get your dad (who is an admin) to login and try the installation under his profile. If it works for him then thats probably where its going wrong. I know thats not a solution for you, but perhaps an opportunity to explain to your dad why he needs to grant you admin access for your education :)

the ad$$anonymous$$ account is locked and for some reason nobody can log into it (including my dad) and I don't want to try and hack into the account because last time I tried to do that (using a flash drive) i almost got my computer stuck in bios

Yeah tricky, sounds a bit more like a windows thing than a Unity thing probably.

However in windows 10 theres nothing particularly special about the built in ad$$anonymous$$istrator account and a "regular" ad$$anonymous$$ account. The built in ad$$anonymous$$istrator (login "ad$$anonymous$$istrator") is disabled by default in windows 10. If you have windows 10 pro then there is a tool called computer management that can be used to enable the account. If you have windows 10 home then it has to be done at the command prompt (run as an ad$$anonymous$$istrator) with the command net user ad$$anonymous$$istrator /active:yes [At the run box type winver if you're not sure whether you're on home or pro

However thats just to switch on the specific "ad$$anonymous$$istrator" user. If your dad is an ad$$anonymous$$ then in settings > accounts it should identify that his user is an Ad$$anonymous$$istrator on his account page. Depending on how your computer is setup - if he is an Ad$$anonymous$$istrator I think you need to ask him to elevate your account from user to ad$$anonymous$$istrator.

With the built in "Ad$$anonymous$$istrator" account disabled, when you get your security prompt during installation it would be your dads account details (username and password) that would need to be entered. However as I noted, even if you manage to install using his credentials for ad$$anonymous$$ access the application may not work correctly going forward.

Obviously you need your dads assistance with all of this. Hope some of that was useful.
