How can you get an inspector value at compile time?

I have a string (Google ID) that is entered into the inspector in a GameObject. I need to retrieve this string OnPostprocessBuild to then inject it into the AndroidManifest. This string may change between different developers so a manual solution is not an option. I can get this string OnValidate but I don't know where to properly store it to then get it at compile time.

Things I have tried:

  • EditorPrefs: did not work because those don't exist in the right context (in OnPostprocessBuild)

  • In OnValidate, saving an additional static string. This actually worked but doesn't seem like the correct way to do things.

  • ScriptableObject: it doesn't show up in the Inspector so a developer I share this with will need to manually go into the scriptable object and set the value. Not ideal, I would prefer to have the value shown in the inspector.

Does anyone have any ideas ?

Why wouldn't the ScriptableObject solution be ideal? It makes sense to me to have a SO as a data container of your "configuration settings". You would only need to set the value once for every developer and it would be used across your project without having to provide the value in every scene.

A custom inspector to display the string directly should not be too hard to implement if it really bothers you.


Alternatively, you could have the script attached to a prefab you should be able to retrieve in the OnPostprocessBuild.
