Question by Leonard Kropf · Jun 01, 2010 at 12:09 PM · importblender

Blender 2.5 alpha

The new Blender doesn't work with Unity when I import a model from the new Blender. It says Blender couldn't import it to fbx??

Can somebody help me?

Blender 2.5 is alpha software and doesn't really work well with Unity at this point. Stick with Blender 2.49b until 2.5 is done.

+1. I wanted to quote from the Forums, I seem to remember people there having problems with 2.5(alpha) - but no Forums at the moment... If you really wanted the snazzy new 2.5 interface, I guess you could work in 2.5, then read the .blend into 2.49 for export to FBX.

Just use the FBX exporter and forget about using Blender files straight into the Assets folder. It's much cleaner and problem saving, believe me.

I can't agree with that...Blender can't import FBX files, which makes it a much more inconvenient way of working. If you just use Blender files, you can simply load/save/update them at any time and Unity picks up the changes no problem.

I can't agree either. Unity includes this functionality exactly because the fbx exporting is such a pain.

Using automatic export from 3rd party modeler apps has problems more easily than putting your FBX in the assets folder. In example if you save your $$anonymous$$ax (or Blender or $$anonymous$$aya) scene in the asset folder EACH TI$$anonymous$$E UNITY WILL CONVERT IT and this is a pain. I don't know you, but I surely don't like that. I also versionize my scenes along with progress so it's simply an impossible way of work. When I want to export a scene (or better a mesh of a scene) I just export it in the asset folder. That's S$$anonymous$$OOOOOOTH.

$$anonymous$$ore... where is the pain in exporting FBX? I have absolutely no problem with $$anonymous$$ax. And after all what do you think Unity is doing when it makes the conversion from your modeling app???

The pain in exporting FBX in Blender is that the export process is tedious compared to simply hitting control-S. You have to keep multiple versions, since Blender won't load FBX files, so you have to save your .blend file and the FBX every time in different places--very annoying. Since it takes about .1 seconds for Unity to make Blender convert to FBX, it's not a pain at all, it's completely seamless. There are no problems using automatic export with Blender files. $$anonymous$$aybe $$anonymous$$ax is different, I don't know, but that's not what we're talking about.
