when i build my game, the player starts at (0,0,0) instead of where i placed it

so this is a bug that only happens when i build an exe, the in-editor game works. my player starts the game above zero, at (0,21,0) but in the built pc version the player starts at (0,0,0), under the ground plane, and falls out of the scene. i need to be able to control where the player starts eventually and i have some other classes that are dependent on being at y=0 so i can't just move the whole scene down. how do i even begin to debug why my player capsule is starting at 0 instead of 21 (where i placed it) in the build? the player's position is not being set by any scripts and it's just a capsule collider nested into an empty folder with a camera and some lights. i can share screenshots or code snippets but i have no idea which ones would be pertinent

the player capsule has a rigidbody and collision, is it possible something could be pushing it down?? how would i even test that. again, it works completely fine in-editor

okay i've discovered a weird workaround for this. the 0 bug only happens when you start the game, but not when you load the level? so if i just reload the level it works the second time?? why would instantiating the game reset the player's position?? is it possible the level is being loaded before the player's position is set????
