Help with Colliders?

My friends and I are a bit new to Unity, and I am having some trouble figuring out the collider system. What I am looking to do is make it so my First Person Controller does not walk through walls and trees etc. It has a character controller on it, and the wall I am using for testing has a box collider, the tree has nothing currently.
