Basic question about shaders and passes

In terms of multiple passes and SetTexture in shaderlab I have a few questions.

  1. Within a multiple pass, SetTexture can be called multiple times but they are still within a single pass. Am I correct in assuming that color information is written out only when the Pass is complete? Specifically, if I call "previous" from another SetTexture, it's grabbing the previous information from an offscreen color buffer rather than the screen.

  2. If I add a completely new Pass, the the previous Pass has already written out the color information to the screen correct? In other words, in another Pass, the color buffer information has already been updated by the previous pass and if I set in the first pass the front faces of a black cube to orange and then in a new pass set only some parts blue, I will be updating the orange, not the black right?
