Character animation modeling

I'm making character models in Maya 2010 and in Blender 2.5... my question is does it have to be one solid model to work properly or can I have it in peices. Example: body is a seperate block, then I model a seperate head and neck and slide the end on the neck into the body model. Will that cause problems?

Hey,

You can definitely import an animated model with separate pieces. So technically there shouldn't be a problem.

That said there are loads of Pro's an Con's for this approach depending on what you're making and what the target platform is. But I hope this answers you're question!

cheers!

A typical example of this is the DAZ Victoria character which was made up of multiple sub-meshes compared to the new Genesis model which is a single mesh.

Basically the rule of thumb is the more sub meshes you have for modelling and animation the less process efficient its like to be due to the assignment of materials and textures taking up draw calls etc…
