Question by LEGOManiac · Jul 22, 2010 at 11:54 AM · install

How do end users run Unity without administrator rights?

It's odd that I don't see a forum for really basic questions.

I have installed Unity on 2 user machines as administrator (on XP Pro) as the users are restricted from installing it themselves. Which files need to have their permissions changed in order for the end users to run Unity without starting IE with the runas command and giving it administrator rights?

While not exactly an answer (that's why I post this as comment): Have you tried running Visual Studio 2010 in Windows 2008 Server and IIS and do debugging without running the whole application as ad$$anonymous$$istrator? It seems to me that in general, developers need at least as many rights as ad$$anonymous$$istrators ;-) ... sorry I can't be of actual help but I do Unity development on $$anonymous$$ac OS, so I can't even test this real quick (but I remember having some permissions issues here as well every now and then).

Are you sure the users need anything extra to run Unity - not install? I installed Unity on XP/SP3 as ad$$anonymous$$, and run it as a normal (non-power) user, and never changed any permissions. It might also depend on your Ad$$anonymous$$ permissions - if any files they install doesn't have read/execute perms for user, then obviously it would fail, so at a $$anonymous$$imum, put read/execute on the Unity directory structure.

I just hate it when I ask an obvious question but can't see the answer to save my life. The users need to have read an execute rights in the /program files/unity and all sub-folders. That hit me about a half an hour after posting the question. Duh.

Waaay too tired.
