I have been keen for someone to answer this too. I have just started out, and am only program$$anonymous$$g, for models using native Unity objects (sphere, cube, capsule, cylinder) to make objects to use in games.

Something I discovered but have not tried to apply yet is Trail Renderer.

http://unity3d.com/support/documentation/Components/class-TrailRenderer.html

But as it seems similar to a particle, if there is too much trail then the frames would really slow down if the trail was not eventually destroyed. (i.e. like the $$anonymous$$ax Energy setting in particles)

So my other guess would be some kind of texture trickery, again something I know nothing about. But I really hope you get an answer , this would be a great effect I would also like to be able to make. Good Luck.

(And with 81 views , there are alot of other people who want to know too !)

Im using Particles for the sand moviment witha script capable of activating and deactivating them when the player moves, this particles is iinside the player object, found this vid very usefull, and i think ill try to reproduce this effect to a more sandy way.

Trails on the sand are usually done with Projectors, which works well on PC (but it will cause the area which it hits to be redrawn, increasing the draw-calls and lowers performance somewhat), but on Mobile phones it's to slow and can't be used.

You may also want to try out working with decals, though that may not be perfectly suitable for uneven terrain like a sand dune.
