Question by keeper-20 · Apr 06, 2012 at 09:35 PM · speedometernon-gui

rotate mesh needle on mesh speedometer ( NOT GUI )

I have a modeled speedometer with a modeled needle (all 3D NOT GUI)

how can I get the needle rotate according to the vehicle speed? And to obviously set limits

can someone please help me? I was reading here and on Unity but can not find a solution as all of it is GUI based I really need it for actual 3D model

Just set the rotation using Euler. Supposing the needle rotates about the Y axis, you could use this:

var maxAngle: float = 100.0; // max needle excursion in degrees var maxVel: float = 200.0; // max velocity

private var rot0: Quaternion;

function Start(){ rot0 = transform.localRotation; // save initial needle rotation }

function SetNeedle(vel: float){ var newAngle = vel*maxAngle/maxVel; transform.localRotation = Quaternion.Euler(0, newAngle, 0) * rot0; } Call SetNeedle(velocity) to rotate the needle to the right angle. You may have to filter the velocity with Lerp in order to have a smooth movement.

Please don't post comments as answers. What about @aldonaletto's script didn't work for you? Did you get any errors?

This should work: you must attach this script to the needle, and it will rotate to an angle proportional to the velocity when you call SetNeedle(velocity). Calling SetNeedle(0) will rotate the needle to its starting position; calling SetNeedle(100) with these initial settings will rotate it 50 degrees. if the needle rotates to the wrong side, use a negative maxAngle.

O$$anonymous$$ Thanks

I think I might have an error somewhere in the structure but I try again

Should I attach the needle perhaps to an empty gameObject? and then the script to the needle?
