Check the terrain shaders in the built-in shaders download from unity. Here are also some terrain shaders that you can use.

Why should it not? They use a splatmap and it works fine. If you want to add more than 4 texture layers, you should add a second splatmap and extend the built-in shaders in TerrainShaders\Splats.
