Best Practices for Rigging/animating a character with a gun

Hi,

I'm working on a side scrolling 2.5d game. The main character has a gun that attached to his hands. I was thinking of handling the aiming like 'Angry Bots' Demo. The player object, and weapon follow the direction of the mouse. (I assume Mouse look is at work)

My question: What is the best way to rig a character like this? Should I animate frames for aiming, or can this be done through code? Does the weapon arm and weapon have to be separate objects parented to the main player character?

I can't seem to find any information on this. Any insight would be much appreciated.
