Question by Cobalt60 · May 31, 2012 at 02:15 AM · publishingxbox360

Is indie capable of publishing on xbox

I know t$$anonymous$$s is a simple question and I have looked everywhere to find out but have come up short handed. I just want to know if you can publish your game onto the Xbox 360 with the free version of unity once you buy the toolkit from Microsoft. Any answers are greatly appreciated. Sincerely: Cobalt60

No, you need a Unity XBox license (w$$anonymous$$ch is per-game, contact sales for a price), as well as being a licensed XBox developer.

Er, no, I already said you can't. You need a Unity XBox license, which is per-game. Contact Unity sales, but I can tell you it will be far more than $100. (And the $100 XNA thing isn't what you need anyway, you also need an actual XBox publishing license; Unity doesn't do XNA. Console publishing isn't something you can do as a hobby.)

I think to publish on a console, you need to be a registered developer. At least for PS3, that is for sure. You would have to be a company registered as a game developer. For xbox, the only section you can develop for would be the Indie market on xbox live. There you need that $100 membership, you send your game which is reviewed and then agreed or rejected. But it might be for Xna only...

No indie is not capable of publis$$anonymous$$ng xbox titles, you need a separate licence. Even if you had a studio and that $100 members$$anonymous$$p, it's $80,000 per title! You're better off sticking with a computer licence.

The XNA will allow you to publish in the Indy area of X-Box Live. You are limited to 20 titles without further licensing. You may also develop for windows phone, unlimited paid aps and a limited number of free apps. If you develop a game and wish to take it to the next level (Arcade) you would need to contact Microsoft through the App Hub. T$$anonymous$$s process can take a w$$anonymous$$le but is relatively painless. So to answer your question “Is indie capable of publis$$anonymous$$ng on xbox” Yes as Indy marketplace is part of X-Box.

We presently have 2 titles on the X-Box Indy marketplace and are looking into the Unity Engine for future development.

On a side note all XNA(Indy)games must be under 500MB

Unity doesn't do XNA.

The user asking was referring to Unity 'Free' version or 'Indie' version not asking if he could publish as an indie.
