Question by ThePunisher · Jul 11, 2012 at 06:17 PM · prefabsmetafiles

When do meta files change?

Ok, my company uses Perforce as the external version control tool for Unity projects, and I have a pretty good grasp on what all is modified when I do certain things.

Yesterday, however, I made some modifications to a prefab and somehow the .meta file associated with that prefab changed. This threw me for a loop because none of the changes I made should have caused the "GUID" within the meta file to change, yet it did.

As I have seen, from first hand experience, the following actions/scenarios will NOT change the meta files:

  1. Adding or Removing objects within the root game object of the prefab (parent).

  2. Modifying properties within any components of the parent or children.

  3. Adding or removing components to the parent or children.

  4. Moving the file. (Although this does changes the location of the meta file, it does not change the GUID)

  5. Renaming the file.(This causes the meta file's name to change, but does not modify the GUID)

So my question is, what DOES cause the GUID within the .meta files to change?

Btw. I only did actions 1 and 2.

Thanks in advance, Rob

So I never did find out what caused the prefab's meta file to change, but I do have some more information now I am more experience with Unity.

Any type of file that contains import settings (such as Textures, FBX files, audio) has its import settings stored in the meta file. Whenever you change the import settings it is the meta file that will change and not the actual asset.
