Augmented Reality

Hi to all

Currently I am researching the feasibility of going into a Augmented reality project , What I need to do is be able to track a face using the webcam / or camera devices attached to the system in order to put glasses on the persons eyes.

I have been looking into Total Immersion but their pricing is redicilous. (Granted what they do is impressive but I do not sign a partnership with GM just becuase I want to buy a car from them , also dont pay royalties for every city I want to drive the car in ) but somehow they feel its justified.

Vuforia looks cool but I still have alot of unanswered questions about it (Regarding price and if it can actually do facial tracking) If anyone has used them please let me know.

Does anyone know how I can get going with this , Main Thing this is facial tracking not AR with predefined markers

Advice from coders who did this before would be most welcome.

Also yes I have googled this , I googled it again and then i yahoo'd it :)

So heres the criteria for the project.

  1. Must work on Android and IOS , Web player would be a bonus

  2. Must do facial tracking ( no markers)

Thanks in advance, and if it seems like I am ranting please excuse it is quite a painfull topic to research.

As someone using Vuforia, i can say that it seems to be free to use, both for personal and commercial use (check the licensing and commercial terms near the bottom of this page https://developer.qualcomm.com/mobile-development/mobile-technologies/augmented-reality )

Vuforia has both a library for iOS and one for android so both platforms would be covered there (actually not sure if either of those work with PC/MAC/WEB...never had the webcam to test it), so that would need some looking into.

However Vuforia as far as i'm aware doesn't have built in facial tracking. So far the only "out of the box" unity setup for face-tracking that i know of is the DFusion system... which i agree looks bad both in licensing and the fact that its a pain in the arse even to get their example projects to work).

Unfortunately this means that you're either stuck with them, or stuck doing a lot more leg work yourself, in terms of bringing in the camera feed yourself, and then finding (or if you want to go whole hog on it, making your own) face detection solution for that video feed.

if you do pursue the DIY route. then here are some links that might help as a starting point for what its worth.

Right unless you train Vuforia on faces, probably not going to work for you. Look into what people have done with OpenCV. It would be a DLL so not for web player. I'd really love to see a port or some kind of adapter for it for Unity.
