Profiler incrementing mesh count even for deleted meshes

When trying something like that in the Update() function of a camera object for example:

     void Update () {
         GameObject plane = new GameObject();
         MeshFilter meshFilter = (MeshFilter)plane.AddComponent(typeof(MeshFilter));
         plane.AddComponent(typeof(MeshRenderer));
         Mesh m = new Mesh();
         meshFilter.mesh = m;
         Destroy (plane);
    }

I would expect destroying the game object would destroy the mesh and other components. But the profiler shows an always increasing amount of mesh and material count. Is this because the profiler only counts meshes created and doesn't take into account their deletion? Or is it because the meshes are not actually deleted? Please note that adding call to System.GC.Collect() does not fix the problem.
