unity make a skin/texture to a character like the robot from the fps tutorial

in unity in the fps tutorial with the robot how do u make a sskin/texture for the robot the way they did, is there some certain way its made beacuse its 3d bodyparts are flattened into sections of a 2d image

i would take a look at UV mapping: Here it is pretty complex...
