Terrain brush duplicates and warps.

When I try to edit a section of terrain, the terrain brush warps away from the cursor and duplicates itself. Zooming close into the terrain seems to make the problem disappear but I find doing so to be highly impractical. Any advice or solutions would be greatly appreciated.
