Mesh Coliders Don't play well together? Alternatives?

I have read a few posts on the topic, and it seems the only answer is a compound colider. Are there other options?

I have a rack of bowling pins that currently do not interact with one another because they all have mesh colliders - due to the odd shape and client requirements. As I understand it, each part of the pin plays an important role in the outcome of the frame.

What are my options to maintain realistic pin interaction with low overhead?

From unity reference manual:

Convex: If enabled, this Mesh Collider will collide with other Mesh Colliders. Convex Mesh Colliders are limited to 255 triangles.

Keep in mind that MeshCollider to MeshCollider collisions aren't very good performance-wise. As an alternative, you can add a simple hierarchy of sub-objects place primitive colliders on them (to act as "collider containers"). Rigidbody of their parent will detect and use them.
