No, you don't need Java to install and/or run Unity.

You mean Java the web programming language that is used to help run webpages? If so, no. It has nothing to do with Unity. You should have Java installed anyway on your computer to help run certain websites. And I would recommend using the latest version of Unity. Always keep it updated for all the best options and any potential bug fixes.

That's not Java. That's Java Script.

Java and Java Script are two different languages. They are some what similar, but Java is its own OOP language. It can function in its own. Java Script also is an OOP, but it is used through other web sources and languages such as HT$$anonymous$$L and CSS.

Java and Javascript are not at all similar. Java is a program$$anonymous$$g language that is compiled and run on the Java virtual machine when javascript is a scripting language interpreted by the web browser using the jQuery library. Java has typed variables when Js has not. Java requires a return value for a function, Js does not...and the list goes on. So no Java is not javascript which is not Unityscript which looks more like Actionscript.

To answer the original question, you do not need the Java6 or 7 that is required to run applications on your web browser. And you do not need jQuery either. You will need the web player to run the web builds. That is about it.

Oh, and I surely do not mean to be rude even though my comment might sound...Just trying to make thing clear.

I would think Unity should start to modify the occurrences of Javascript for UnityScript in the docs as it seems to confuse beginners.
