Question by BobbleHead · Dec 02, 2012 at 01:06 PM · lighttransparent

Transparent material/object that light hits?

Hey all.

How does one create invisible/transparent objects than light can hit/be shown hitting?

I don't want to say reflective, as the object doesn't need to reflect light it just needs to be transparent and show light hitting it

Similar to the image above, but the black box would be invisible?

How it can be lit if it's 100% transparent? If it's not 100% transparent, then you can try using Transparent/Diffuse shader.

Edit: you can always write a shader which makes object transparent in unlit parts and non-transparent depending on light intensity.

I was following this question because I liked the idea, maybe not conventional but pretty cool.

I guess the question is : can I have light hitting a mesh without that mesh having a renderer. And I guess the answer is no.

You need to have a renderer, with a transparent shader attached, for the graphics to be able to recognize and calculate its passes for the scene. (As Paulius suggested)

Or they may be some shader trick somewhere (As ZoomDomain suggested).
