how to copy a game object

 copy = new gameobject();
 
 copy = original;
 
 copy.renderer.enabled = false;


this makes the original object invisible like it was a pointer and not an actual copy.

do i need to use instantiate or what to get a copy of an object that i can modify without changing the original

I know this is a billion years old, but commenting for other people with similar question that found this.

GameObject is a reference type which means what you're passing around basically is a pointer to the original. Reference types pass around the address of the variable, and then whenever you preform something, the compiler uses that reference location and uses whatever variable is there, null meaning there is nothing there.

At this point, you might be wondering what's happened to the previous reference to that new gameobject you just created. In short, you're fortunate that C# has Garbage Collection because, on a different language like C or C++, that would've just caused a memory leak. Effectively what you've done is "threw away the key" to the memory that variable was using with no way to get it back during runtime. C# is able to get rid of it for you, however, but in C/C++ you would have to manually release that memory before resetting its value to original.

Yes, instantiate will effectively clone the object as a copy. See here.
