Question by markfrancombe · Dec 16, 2012 at 10:22 PM · mecanim

Animation Inspector greyed out (mecanim tut)

Im following the tutorial animation, and trying to learn mecanim. Im using my own model, in my own scene. But when I get to add an animation (Idle for example) the inspector is greyed out, where in the tut vid, he is changing stuff. Im using the same motions as in the tutorial, just applying them to my model. My Idle animaion doesnt seem to loop and Id like to turn that on, but can't.

Any Ideas why? Im on Unity 4 free, is that the reason?

Mark

(this is a bump, I posted v late last night and havent got an answer, this forum goes too fast, in 20 mins my question shot off the bottom! Hope thats ok?)

Okay, figured it out: you have to select the animation itself - not the clip - and then you will be able to set all of the properties in the Inspector:

I experienced the grey Inspector panel when trying to adjust animation clip properties. My solution is below. First a brief description:

I have a character with a single Take split into several animation clips. The animation properties can be accessed by selecting the character in the Project panel and then selecting the desired animation from in the Clips table of the Inspector.

When I wanted to retarget these animations to other Humanoids, I tried double-clicking just an animation itself to see it in the Inspector hoping to adjust properties like Root Transform Position, etc. Unfortunately, accessing the animations directly by double clicking shows the animation properties in the Inspector panel, but it's greyed-out.

I discovered that if I duplicate the desired animation clip, the duplicate will be created outside the original character it was defined in, and the duplicate can be double-clicked and then edited in the Inspector.

So, to summarize the pattern I found: Properties of animation clips that are not bound to a character can be edited directly in the Inspector panel. If an animation clip is nested within a character, its properties can only be adjusted by selecting the character in the Projects panel then selecting the clip from the Clips table in the Inspector panel.

1) In your scene "Hierarchy" tab you have to select the game object with "Animator" component, which brings the panels of the components into the "Inspector" tab.

2) In your "Animator" panel of your "Inspector" tab you have to select the "Controller" value and double click it, which opens your "Animator" tab with the Mecanim animation layers and clears your "Inspector" tab at the very same instant into a greyed out empty state.

3) In your "Animator" tab in any animation layer you have to select any animation state or any animation transition, just then their details will be displayed inside your "Inspector" tab for tweaking them.

I assume that somehow you have missed the step 3, so I suggest you try it right now and tell if that helps with resolution.
