Does Network.Connect still go through the Master Server?

I'm looking for a way to transfer data quickly and at the moment I'm using Unity's MasterServer method for connecting a client to a host. However, I'd like to cut out the MasterServer as a middle man, if possible, without having to write custom socket code.

Does Network.Connect(ip) still use the MasterServer for communication? Or is it more direct?
