Question by VigorousApathy · Dec 25, 2012 at 09:55 PM · movetowardsgetmousebutton

MouseButton + MouseButtonUp + MoveTowards

I'm trying to understand the Input.GetMouseButton and Input.MouseButtonUp code and their behaviors in regards to MoveTowards.

Code Explanation:

I'm trying to have a Vector3.MoveTowards play when the mouse is held down and then when it's released. When the mouse is pressed down for the first time, it will play smoothly. When the button is released, it teleports back to its original position. When the button is pressed again, the object now teleports back and forth with a press and release and no longer plays a smooth animation between the two points.

Questions:

  1. How do I implement mouse button presses that show the full transition from point A to B using this type of code?

  2. Is it impossible to play a full animation on MouseButtonUp because of short span that call is true?

Example Code:

 var start    : Transform;
 var end        : Transform;

 function Update ()
 {
     MouseDown();
     MouseUp();
 }

 function MouseDown()
 {
     if(Input.GetMouseButton(0))
     {
         transform.position = Vector3.MoveTowards(start.position, end.position, Time.time);
     }
 }

 function MouseUp()
 {
     if(Input.GetMouseButtonUp(0))
     {
         transform.position = Vector3.MoveTowards(end.position, start.position, Time.time);
     }
 }

Here is the answer:

It's stupid to do it this way, it will not work, and you should just use animations.

It was a good noob exercise in figuring this out though.
