in a word, it is unbelievably easy to do this with 2DToolkit.

perhaps, get all the systems on the asset store (in the "2DToolkit" vein) and try them all to see which one you like.

Since you'll be putting a year of your life in to making your game

So you want to have absolutely the most comfortable package for you before you begin!

Some of the assets you can get for Unity are astounding. "2DToolkit" literally saves you a year of development time.

The very bloke below has a massive asset called "Unity Serializer" which is famous and almost unbelievable (used for "cloud" and "game saving" type problems), it saves you perhaps 2 years of development time.

Isn't "Ski Safari" a unity title? I guess that's the top selling 2D game built w/ Unity. So yeah game engines (like Unity) are for 2D titles.

Yes, many 2D games are made in Unity. There are built in features for 2D and also some fantastic (and reasonably priced or free) Asset Store assets to give you a jump start.

As @Fattie says above 2D Toolkit is a really great choice.
