Animations, LocalPosition, and GlobalPosition Help

I'm having a lot of trouble doing something that I think should be very simple.

Here is the general objective of what I'm trying to do:

I have boxes that are next to each other that I want to switch places when they are moved by a mouse. I have them switch the first time perfectly, but if I try to switch them back, they separate in the opposite direction.

Each cube is parented to a blank object. The localposition of the cubes inside start at 0,0,0, and animations play correctly when the localposition is at that location. I've noticed that the problem is that when the localposition of the object is moved by the animation, the origin of the animation stays put at 0,0,0 resulting in the weird separation when the objects are moved again. Note that I'm only using animations to reposition the object, there is nothing in the code that positions the object.

  1. Do the animations need to be assigned to the parent object to work correctly? If I do that, then they don't work and reset to the worldposition since you need a parented object to do animations right. I feel that just becomes this circular statement where I have to parent to infinity to get this to work. I'm definitely missing an animation concept here.

  2. Or, is there a way to update the localposition of the animation to the current local position of the object?

Thanks so much if you take a look at this.
