How to do 2d character animations dependent on in-game information?

Hi all,

I'm trying to figure out the best way to handle animations for my characters. So far, I've been building them in Blender (without using bones or anything) and doing all my animations in Blender. This works for the most part, but I'd like to add some specific animations that will be dependent on runtime information. For example, if the character is near a lever and pulls it, I want his hand to grab the top of the lever like he's pulling it. Can anyone:

  1. Recommend a good way to construct/rig my characters so they can do this?

  2. Recommend the best way to go about animating it (be that in Blender, Unity, etc.)?
