Question by todderasesared · Jan 12, 2013 at 11:56 PM · macstartup4.1lion

Unity 4.0.1 won't start - Mac OS Lion - Any Ideas?

I've been uninstalling and reinstalling for hours, but for some reason when I launch the Unity app no GUI appears. I do get a constant load on by 4 cores by a Unity process, though, so Unity is doing something behind the scenes. In effect, after a fresh install of Unity 4.0.1 on my up-to-date iMac Lion machine with 12G of RAM all it does is "hang" chomping up processor cycles with no visible sign of the app.

Anybody run into this before. Any ideas on what might be wrong or how I might debug my problem?

Thanks!

It was crashing while trying to load the project "4-0_AngryBots". Now, it asks me to create a new project. When I do, I get this error in the log:

/Users/todderasesareddot/TTProject Receiving unhandled NULL exception Launching bug reporter

*** Launching bug reporter due to crashbug. gSingleton == NULL

(Filename: /Applications/buildAgent/work/812c4f5049264fad/Editor/Src/EditorUserBuildSettings.cpp Line: 374)

Something is amiss here.

unity running on mac os lion will not run dx11, you need windows to run unity full.

Thanks for the reply. That's really unfortunate. Too bad there was not any warning about this during the installation. So, the system requirements say:

"$$anonymous$$ac OS X: Intel CPU & "Snow Leopard" 10.6 or later"

That could easily be taken to mean any OS X later than Snow Leopard 10.6 (including Lion). Is there a version of Unity4 that I can install that does not use dx11?

Am I missing something?

Hey todderasesared,

I don't know why unity is crashing for you, but I'm pretty sure you can run Unity on a $$anonymous$$ac. I'm using Unity Pro 3.5.6f4 on $$anonymous$$ac, (and have been for some time) and have had no issues. I understand that in Unity 4 DX 11 is new, and that it only works on Windows, but that shouldn't stop it from running on $$anonymous$$ac altogether; they wouldn't break functionality on a whole OS just for one feature. I'd email UnityTech., and ask if they can help.

Thanks for the reply. I just installed Unity 3.5.7 and it works. No idea why Unity 4.0.1 is crashing for me out of the box. Perhaps I will email the unity tech like you suggest. Though, I may just stick with untiy 3.5.7 for now.
