Object not set to instance error

I am currently working on a script where I need to find the closest "Node" in a list of "Nodes". It keeps returning that what I'm testing is not an instance of an object, and I can't figure out why it wouldn't be an instance. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

 class
 {
    private List<Node> nodeList;

    private Node FindNearestNode(GameObject testObject)
     {
         int startPoint = 0;

         //find the closest node to the currentObject to get a start point on the grid
         for (int i = 0; i < nodeList.Count; i++)
         {
             if (Vector3.SqrMagnitude(nodeList[i].gameObject.transform.position - testObject.transform.position) <
                 Vector3.SqrMagnitude(nodeList[startPoint].gameObject.transform.position - testObject.transform.position))
             {
                 startPoint = i;
             }
         }
         return nodeList[startPoint];
     }
 }

I am just iterating through the list since it is only run once and not in an update. The error appears on the line with the for statement. I'm sure it's something very simple and very stupid on my part, but I've been working on this project all day and I'm tired and I can't find an error, and hoping for some assistance. Thanks in advance.

Tell which line does that. This is what error messages are for. To easily spot the problem...

If it is line 10 as you suggest, that means that nodeList is not being initialized. You are declaring the variable but not creating the list. You need a 'new' statement. I tried to type in a sample syntax but this edit field will not let me type in angle brackets, so look here.

Wow......I was initializing the list, but I was doing it in a "OnAwake()" method call. For anyone that's curious, it's "Awake()". I'm an idiot.....Thank you guys for looking at this, apologize for wasting everyone's time.
