How to safely import assets into Unity?

Hello, I have some un-finished projects in the old vers. of Unity. I've noticed when I imported assets into Unity 3, I lost most of my progress on the game. Also when I imported a Blender model it looks wierd, is that becuase I'm exported it as a .dxf file? (Blender 2.49 doesn't do FBX)

You might want to provide more detail as to "lost most of my progress" and "model looks weird", textures not mapping, normals reversed, etc., as many people have been able to import projects into Unity 3.0 without any issues and its hard to deter$$anonymous$$e what issues you are having.

what I mean by lost most progress is that all the levels became completely empty (if I'm remembering correctly), but the project stuff still existed and the prefabs didn't have their materials.

Blender 2.49 does do FBX. That's how Blender files are loaded into Unity--Blender is launched in the background and made to export to FBX. There's not much reason to export Blender files as anything; just save the files normally and let Unity handle it for you.

I tried that many times and it says "Blender cannot convert the .blend file into a FBX file."

Then you need to fix your Blender install; try reinstalling it.

google "blender 2.49 FBX exporter", they say it doesn't unless you edit this thing with html tags. I don't know how to do this.

I don't understand what you mean about html tags. Blender 2.49 does export FBX just fine (which is actually thanks to Unity, since UT apparently paid someone to make it happen). It's what I use, it works perfectly.
