Car Placement in Race

Hey,

How can I figure out where a car is in a race? In terms of placement.

So like - I'm in first, he passes me, I'm in second. How can the game figure out on a winding, looping, overpass track who's where?

You can try having checkpoints or mile markers in your track. The person closest to the marker is first, the person behind him is second , so on . You don't have to render them, even drop in couple of empty game objects for each winding /looping etc. You can functions similar to Vector3.distance for calculating distances. Though it may not work for winding paths or for finding who is ahead etc.

It would also have trouble with someone lapping someone else. Although if you paired this system with something keeping track of who is on what lap, and had a central object polling the checkpoints (or the cars) for those variables, you could compute who was in what place.

Exactly, it would depend entirely on the track setup to compute who is leading.
