Question by jessee03 · Feb 20, 2013 at 06:38 PM · prefabs

Prefabs sharing variables

For some reason it seems like each of my prefab enemies share the same variable. If I use Destroy(this.gameObject); it will destroy a single prefab but if I give all the enemies health and attack 1 enemy then all the other enemies will die when any other enemy dies. I want them all to have their own seperate scritps / variables. Is this possible?

I'm blind... yes that was the issue, didn't know static variables would do that to all the prefabs.

The whole point of static variables is that there's only one instance.

I thought static var was used for being able to access them from another script

Well, yes and no. Static, as Eric has mentioned, makes that particular variable Globally accessible, and there is only one copy of it. This means that you can: access, edit, modify the variable to your heart's content, from anywhere within your application.

This gets messy, and can get messy really fast. Not only can you improperly access it, but you can also have problems with static variable cleanup.

What you're most likely looking for is making the variable public, and accessing that variable through the local copy of the class itself. Take for example, when you instantiate a clone of your prefab, you would then be able to access any public variables of that clone locally within your script.

Probably should do some basic reading on C-like-language keywords.

Have you set any variables to static within the class?
