Question by angrycarrots · Mar 01, 2013 at 01:00 AM · variablemovevalueheadtemporary

Cannot modify a value type return value of `UnityEngine.Transform.localPosition'. Consider storing the value in a temporary variable. HELP

I was following along a tutorial on Youtube but it was written in JS but i translated it to C# but i get that error. Here is my code:

     headBobStepCounter += Vector3.Distance(parentLastPos, transform.parent.position) * headBobSpeed;
     transform.localPosition.x = Mathf.Sin(headBobStepCounter) * headBobAmountX;
     transform.localPosition.y = (Mathf.Cos(headBobStepCounter * 2) * headBobAmountY) + (transform.parent.localScale.y * eyeHeightRatio) - (transform.parent.localScale.y / 2);

The error is indicating you should put the values into a Vector3 first, and then assign the Vector3 to the position:

 headBobStepCounter += Vector3.Distance(parentLastPos, transform.parent.position) * headBobSpeed;
 Vector3 v3T = transform.localPosition;
 v3T.x = Mathf.Sin(headBobStepCounter) * headBobAmountX;
 v3T.y = (Mathf.Cos(headBobStepCounter * 2) * headBobAmountY) + (transform.parent.localScale.y * eyeHeightRatio) - (transform.parent.localScale.y / 2);
 transform.localPosition = v3T;

transform.position.x = 0;

No problem in JS, need to create another variable in C#. Why we can't do the modification directly in C#? Any thoughts?

This is why I hate C# its so convoluted

What I know about C# is that transform.localPosition.x is "Read Only" so you cannot change it. You don't need to add another variable modify it, you can modify it directly by: transform.localPosition = new Vectro3($$anonymous$$athf.Sin(headBobStepCounter) headBobAmountX, ($$anonymous$$athf.Cos(headBobStepCounter 2) headBobAmountY) + (transform.parent.localScale.y eyeHeightRatio) - (transform.parent.localScale.y / 2), transform.localPosition.z);

It not really because transform.localPosition.x is "Read Only". It turns out when you try to access Position,which is a property that has a getter and setter, you get a copy of the position vector3 due to the getter (you can check out the implementation if you want), thus you shoulnt change the component of a copy value, thats why the compiler throw out the warning.
