Apply shader to terrain

Hello I'm trying to apply a shader I have to a terrain object. However I can't seem to find where to set the shader so it will be applied to the terrain. I can only directly paint the texture which I think looks rather odd. So does anybody know how chance the shader/material of a terrain object (it would be nice if it could be done by script as well).
