Question by omidnoor · Mar 08, 2013 at 07:52 PM · prefabchild object

How can I get a child gameObject of an instance of a prefab ?

Hi,

I want to dynamically assign image to a GameObject, which is the child of a prefab instantiated in code. How can I get a handle on that in C# ?

Thanks O

This is a duplicate of this question.

I suggest you do a search on Google and Unity Answers first before posting a question. Even a quick search will give you results.

You could also check the script reference. Maybe you should read up on the class you just posted in that example, Transform:

http://docs.unity3d.com/Documentation/ScriptReference/Transform.html

You might find out how to 'get a transform in the first place', say under the Inherited Members, and (hint hint) find a method in there that does exactly what you want.

Had seen that answer but it does nt really explain how we get the transform in the first place.

This answer kinda explains it but took a while to combine them.

I guess the answer is :

 Transform t = prefabObject.GetComponentInChildren<Transform>().find("Child_name");

Before accessing the child object, please make sure that that child object is enabled in prefab before enabling or disabling it after getting instantiated. Like in my case, I had a UI Text game object with an image child object. I disabled it in the prefab with the hope to enable it by reference in the script after instantiating it. It only worked if I kept the image(child) component enabled in the prefab.

Dimtext is the game object I instantiated from a prefab. I am accessing the 0th child of the game object.

DimText.transform.GetChild(0).gameObject.SetActive(true);
