Question by infinitypbr · Mar 19, 2013 at 11:02 PM · splash-screen

iOS Splash Screen: Can it be a small image?

I'm in a situation where an app is just a bit over the 50mb threshold, and I'd like to reduce things more without changing the app itself, as I think it's pretty much as small as it can get.

The splash screen, however, is a problem -- I already have just one image that is shared, which sort of sucks since it gets warped on most devices. I'd like to be able to have a very small image, or better yet just text, one that does not expand to fill the screen.

Is this possible?

no, in the actual build in XCode,

the one or more Load images have to be the correct size

there's no possibility to use text, blank, etc.

you can slash the size of your app by compressing the images used in the game, and often compressing your music or sound effects is a huge saving

RECALL THAT PNGs can be radically different sizes IF THE IMAGE IS SIMPLE

PLAIN FLAT COLORS use very little png size. Lossless does not mean linear.

Example .. png 200 BYTES only..

alt text

Example .. png 40kb..

alt text

the second image is some 200x larger files size!

Is there a way to make the load image use a .jpg from the Resources folder rather than a unity-compressed image?

Unfortunately the apps I'm currently working on have no music or sound effects, and the images used are full-screen retina images, in well compressed .jpg format in the Resources folder, so taking up pretty much as little as possible without sacrificing too much quality.

yes,

but i'd recommend sticking to png for $$anonymous$$ISS

BTW your app seems enormous if you are using jpgs for the imagery. You're sure there's no sound? You have stripped the app etc? (a small saving anyway)
